Google+ Mute vs. Ignore

About the new personal mute feature compared to 'Ignore'

With Ignore you do not add the person to your circles and they cannot notify you.
With personal mute you can have the person in your circles but don't receive any notifications from them, however you still see their posts in your stream depending on the circle settings by the slider.

You can also mute someone directly from a post by clicking top right grey arrow and choosing 'Mute John Doe'.

Why mute?

This is a good feature for those people that you feel obliged to keep in your circles but who notify too much. Could be your sister or co-worker.  Before those notifications could not be avoided.
This way you don't hurt anyone's feelings by telling them to shut up...  :-)

If you mute the circle in which this person is, even alone or with few others, then you don't have to see their content in your main stream either. You can mute a circle by clicking on the circle name from the drop down menu on the Home page and sliding the slider all the way to the left.

It is possible just to mute a person or a post from your stream: Click on the grey arrow.

For business Pages

Nice feature to use for muting those people who insist on sharing everything with your page, from family albums to funny posts, right there from the post...  :-)  Without having to block them.

Ignoring people

When a person adds you to a circle, you might not be interested in what they have to say, but blocking them may seem too harsh. Instead, you can just not add them to your circles or ignore them, which will limit their interaction with you.

You can ignore someone from the following places:

- The notifications in your Google bar
- Under the 'Have you in circles' tab while editing your circles or here https://plus.google.com/u/0/circles/addedyou

Circles > Have you in circles > select a person you want to ignore > Actions-button on the top right > Ignore

You can later see all those ignored or blocked from the "Actions" dropdown on the main Circles page:

When you ignore a person:

- They'll be removed from the list of ‘Have you in circles.’
- Their mentions of you won't appear on your Home page and you won't receive a notification for them.

To access the list of all of the people you’ve ignored, click Circles on the side of your Home page, click the gear icon at the top and selectView ignored. If you decide to add a person you previously ignored to a circle, that person will be removed from the list.

Keep in mind that ignoring someone is not the same as blocking.

An ignored person will still be able to comment on your public posts, tag you in photos, and add you to circles. You'll still receive notifications when an ignored person tags you in a photo. In addition, people you’ve ignored may appear as a suggestion again at a later time.

When you click ignore on Google+ you are not just ignoring the notifications that someone circled you, you are ignoring the user, meaning you are not going to see anything that this ignored user ever posts.

This is a great feature if used correctly, it's between a full block and having to see what that person is posting about their kids, but when mistakenly clicked could be rending you stream empty and your ignore list full.

So, how do you un-Ignore someone?

Go to your circles, and click Actions > View Ignored and start clicking away at the "Un-ignore" buttons.

Or wait until some clever coder comes up with an 'Un-ignore all' extension! :-)

Which do you use most, mute or ignore? Why?
