After a few weeks of daily usage of Google+ (aka Google Plus), here are what I’d call the Pluses of Google Plus:
- You can follow anyone you want, and anyone can follow you. Like Twitter.
- Circles. Direct posts to only the people you want to see it, not to everyone all the time.
- Fresh start. It’s a chance to start over…. meaning a news feed devoid of 500 “friends” you barely know sharing their mindless drivel.
- Google integration. You can +1 sites right from the Google results screen. You can also see links that your Google+ or Twitter contacts have shared.
- More Google integration. Your Google+ account will appear on the toolbar seen in Gmail, Google Docs, etc. Notifications will also appear on this toolbar, allowing you to respond to comments without ever leaving Gmail.
- Spam-free (at least in beta). Ahh no ads and no Farmville spam to see. This will surely end at some point, but it’s nice for now.
- It’s not Facebook.
It will be interesting to see how Google+ changes throughout the beta phase, as there are still some features lacking that one would expect from a social media site.
